For this assignment we were told to write a narrative discussing our experiences being exposed to reading and writing and our academic understanding of it through events that influenced it. Students including myself wrote about significant events in our lives that have influenced us in our learning of reading and writing and how that has been carried on with us today. For me specifically I went in chronological order explaining my experience first in elementary school, going into middle school, highschool, and a little bit of college. Throughout my narrative I explained my sister proofreading my work and having different reading levels being two aspects in particular that influenced my understanding of academic literacy. During this assignment I enjoyed reading other people’s narratives and their experiences being exposed to reading and writing for the first time and found it interesting in learning something new about my classmates doing so. I believe that even though we all came from different backgrounds and all having different experiences in our narratives, stepping back and talking about them made me value reading and writing a bit more. The reason I say this is because reading and writing is an activity that we do everyday and is something that feels like second nature to us, but after reading and reflecting how I got to where I am in my reading and writing career I am to say that i’m grateful to be taught what I know and as in my narrative I am excited to expand my knowledge moving forward.
